Trichy: Trichy City Corporation is confident that the ongoing summer is going to be a smooth sail for the city as far as the supply of drinking water is concerned. The copious flow in the Cauvery helps the corporation source adequate quantity of water from collector wells.
According to the corporation sources, water required for the city is 135 MLD. As on Tuesday, around 132 MLD water was pumped through the 10 collector wells on the Kollidam and Cauvery riverbeds. As the residents source the remaining 3 MLD of water through water cans and other modes of potable drinking water, the civic body said that the situation is not alarming.
“We are in a quite comfortable situation to address the drinking water requirements even for the next two months. Fortunately, there was substantial flow both in the Cauvery and Kollidam in the recent months,” an official source with civic body said. As surplus water was let into the Cauvery since last September, the collector wells have been replenished.
As substantial rainfall was predicted by the end of April and the beginning of May this year, the corporation said that the existing collector wells and bore wells will be enough to quench the thirst of the denizens. “We have identified new locations to drill bore wells if the situation demands it,” the official said.
Civic body sources added that supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) enabled water supply helps them contain the water loss during transmission from collector wells to the 140 overhead tanks in the city.
