Ariyalur: Police personnel remained a mute spectator as members of a dominant community targeted Dalits and their properties, a fact-finding team of the Congress has alleged. The fact-finding team headed by Congress’s state SC and ST cell president K Selvaperunthagai visited Ponparappi village in Ariyalur district and interacted with the Dalits who lost their properties during the polling day.
After completing his visit, he said that functionaries of the PMK, who kicked up the violence against Dalits in Ponparappi, where several houses of Dalits were damaged by the members of a caste Hindus, belonged to a dominant community.
“Dalits in Ponparappi had been attacked by the community indiscriminately and they destroyed their properties. This is not the first time where Dalits are attacked by a dominant community when general elections are held in Tamil Nadu,” he alleged.
This could have been averted if police personnel had acted swiftly. In Ponparappi incident too, if police had acted promptly, the attack against Dalits would have been averted, he stated. “It was a routine that members of Pattali Makkal Katchi usually indulge in violence against Dalits. However, this time Hindu Munnani has joined with PMK to perpetrate the crime”, he said.
