₹20-lakh work under way to provide facilities on the lines of LaQshya, a National Health Mission programme

The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, attached to K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College here, has begun a task of remodelling labour rooms and maternity operation theatres on the lines of LaQshya, a programme launched by National Health Mission.

The programme is aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity and improving quality of care during delivery and immediate post-partum care, stabilisation of complications and ensuring timely referrals to offer an effective follow-up system. It also aims at enhancing patient satisfaction and providing Respectful Maternity Care (RMC).

Improving infrastructure, ensuring availability of essential equipment, providing adequate human resources, capacity building of healthcare workers and improving quality processes in the labour room are among the salient features of the LaQshya programme. As per the Operational Guidelines for Obstetric High Dependency Units and Intensive Care Units, a team of workers are making changes in labour rooms, furniture and equipment.

Dean S. Saradha told that the remodelling would cost ₹20 lakh. It had been decided to invite donations for providing value-addition to the labour room. The work would be completed within a month.
