TRICHY: As many as 489 street vendors have submitted fresh applications to enrol in the electoral roll to participate in the vending committee election, which is likely to be conducted by month end.

The civic body had recently published a draft roll of 3,458 street vendors surveyed. As per Tamil Nadu Street Vendors (protection of livelihood and regulation of street vending) Scheme 2015, vending and no vending zones for street vendors should be earmarked through the vending committee to ensure smooth vehicular movement on commercial streets. As they was a delay in its constitution in Trichy, the Madurai bench of Madras high court ordered the civic body last year to constitute vending committee at the earliest.

After collating the list at the main and zonal corporation offices till May 3, officials said that 489 new street vendors have submitted applications to include in the list. Street vendors will be eligible to vote or contest in the election to elect six representatives to the vending committee.

“Scrutiny is underway to include 489 street vendors in the comprehensive list. If the applicants are verified by our officials, the street vendors included in the list can vote by showing valid photo ID proof,” an official with Trichy Corporation said. The most number of applications was said to have come from Srirangam followed by Ponmalai zone.

The vending committee will not only streamline street vendors but also generate revenue for the civic body by way of annual user fee from street vendors for setting up makeshift stalls at permitted locations. “Once the verification process is done, most likely in a week, we will publish the Gazette to conduct vending committee election,” the official source added.

If more than six street vendors apply to contest in the election, officials said that the vending committee election will be held through the ballot system.
