Congress candidate for Tiruchi Parliamentary constituency Su Thirunavukkarasar scored an emphatic win defeating his nearest competitor V. Elangovan of DMDK by a whopping margin of 4,59,286 votes.
The lead of Mr. Thirunavukkarasar kept soaring right from the first round of counting. Mr. Thirunavukkarasar polled 6,21,285 votes against 1,61,999 by Dr. Ilangovan. “The victory margin exceeding 4.5 lakh votes came as a pleasant surprise. I could feel the pulse of the electorate while campaigning, and was expecting to win by a margin of between 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh votes. The margin was possibly among the best at the State-level,” Mr. Thirunavukkarasar said.
Accompanied by DMK leader K. N. Nehru, the new Tiruchi MP attributed his victory to the active campaigning undertaken by cadre of all DMK-led alliance partners. The former Mayor of Tiruchi City Corporation Sarubala R. Thondaiman of AMMK, who contested as an Independent polled 1,00,818 votes. V. Anandharaja of Makkal Needhi Maiyam and V. Vinoth of Naam Tamizhar Katchi were the other candidates who put up a notable performance by polling 42,314 votes and 65,286 votes respectively.
In Nagapattinam, M. Selvaraj of the CPI had built a lead of over 2 lakh votes over his AIADMK rival M. Saravanan at the end of round 21.
In Mayiladuthurai, S.Ramalingam of the DMK defeated his nearest AIADMK rival S.Asaimani by a margin of 2,61,314 votes. Mr.Ramalingam polled 5,99292 votes against Mr.Asaimani’s 3,37,978 votes.
