Some say he was in exile for the past five years while some others feel he had exhibited the solider instinct in him. But veteran politician and former Union Minister S.S. Palanimanickam, who has won the Thanjavur Lok Sabha constituency for a sixth time, has proved that he remains one of the popular faces of the DMK in the delta heartland.
The veteran politician, who has rose to this level, had a shaky start in his pursuit to become a Parliamentarian but got it right in his fourth attempt and continued his dream run for the next four consecutive terms.
Despite being close to the party high command, he was denied a party ticket to contest from Thanjavur in 2014. He maintained a low profile since then. But given an opportunity to contest now, the “sidelined solider” got a much-needed opportunity to get back to active politics.
The veteran politician played his cards shrewdly and took along his party men as he was aware that they would always put their personal animosities in the backburner when their party’s prestige was at stake.
The ‘gentleman politician’ image of Mr. Palanimanickam among the electorate, backed up with the established election symbol, a strong cadre base, and leadership helped the former Union Minister sail through the contest and romp home with a victory margin of more than 3.50 lakh votes, surpassing his own record of registering a win by over 2 lakh votes in 2004 elections, said Sun. Ramanathan, former Corporation councillor and a DMK functionary.
