A blood-stained band aid found in the biryani served to a customer in a popular hotel in Karur district led to its closure on Monday. The incident took place at the Dindigul Thalapakatti biryani restaurant located opposite to Karur bus stand.
Food safety officials from the municipality arrived at the restaurant and stopped the hotel from serving food. A notice has also been served to the management seeking explanation on the incident. The customer, identified as Kavin Kumar, 25, from Erode, visited the restaurant in the afternoon.
He said he ordered chicken biriyani and had consumed almost half of it when he was shocked to find a used band aid with blood stains in it. He complained to the hotel employees, but since he failed to get an appropriate response from them, he called food safety officials over the phone who arrived in a few minutes. Food safety officer of Karur municipality S Karuppaih said he found a band aid in the customer’s plate and asked the hotel to stop serving food and close down.
“We have sought an explanation from the hotel over the incident. If the answer is not convincing, appropriate action will be initiated against the hotel,” he said. Karur town police were also informed about the incident as the customer and hotel staff engaged in an altercation over the incident. Police are examining CCTV footage from the hotel to verify the claims of the customer.
