Adopting child-centred educational approach for kindergarten children, a panchayat union middle school in Karur has adopted Montessori method. Poyyamani panchayat union middle school will perhaps be the first school in the government sector in the district to adopt this method. Karur collector T Anbalagan inaugurated the classes on Thursday.
This government school with over 100 children stand out from any other government school for having W-Fi zone, RO water, air-conditioned computer lab and classrooms and smart classrooms facilities. “With the help of donors, the school had purchased materials worth Rs 2.5 lakh for Montessori method of teaching,” said headmaster S C Muthulakshmi “There has been an increasing awareness on the Montessori method among parents.
Though it has been a proven to be an effective teaching method, many private schools have been using electronic gadgets to teach children claiming to be teaching Montessori method. Montessori is a teacher centric and play-way method of learning. Therefore, we have trained teachers on the Montessori method,” she said. A Boopathi, a teacher, said that a couple of interested parents were selected for Montessori training and have completed certificate course.
This year, 92 new students have joined the school, including 42 students for LKG and UKG classes. District collector T Anbalagan on Thursday was upbeat on seeing the facilities offered to the students and offered to fulfil further requirements of the school.
