higher education secretary summoned in woman faculty abuse case

The director general of police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu and state higher education secretary have been summoned by the National Commission for Scheduled Caste (NCSC )in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a woman faculty from a city college.

The woman, who belongs to the scheduled caste was also abused by her caste name and threatened with murder by the college secretary and another lady staff. L Murugan, vice chairman, NCSC, New Delhi has called for a hearing on June 21 (Friday) at the Tamil Nadu state guest house in Chepauk, Chennai. The woman had complained to the NCSC last month, following which summons were issued to the officials. Passing an order on June 13, the vice-chairman has asked officials to attend the hearing with relevant records.

While director of collegiate education, Chennai and Trichy district superintendent of police have also been called for the hearing, the vicechairman has made it clear that he would meet only the designated officers and asked them not to send their deputies or any designated officials. The woman, an assistant professor from Urumu Dhanalakshmi College (UDC), had accused the college secretary and another lady staff of harassment.

According to her complaint filed with in the Thiruverumbur police station in January 2017, no case was filed following which she approached the Trichy district court. While police had closed her complaint, the court early this year directed them to reopen it and carry further investigation.
