Cauvery water supply to Melur in Madurai was suspended on Tuesday due to pipe line burst at Irumbuthipatti near Mahadhanapuram in the district.
A huge quantity of water went waste as it flowed on the roads. Passersby and villagers, who noticed the pipeline burst, informed the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board (TWAD).
Officials rushed to the spot and closed a valve in order to prevent water from further going waste.
Sources said TWAD officials had begun rectifying the problem. Water supply would be resumed soon after repair work.
