Two more escalators would come up soon at the Trichy railway junction at both ends of the foot over bridge (FoB) which connects the main entrance of the station with the second entry at Kallukuzhi on the other side.
Officials said the facility would be established by December at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore. This apart, the railway authorities are also preparing to provide WiFi facility at 36 more stations in the division. A total of 52 stations including Trichy, Trichy Town, Ponmalai, Srirangam, Lalgudi, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur already have the facility. Trichy junction already has seven platforms and construction of the eighth one is about to be completed, officials said adding that the escalators will connect all the eight platforms. However, the movement of the escalators will only be in the upward direction.
The height of the escalator proposed at the main entry of the FoB would be 7.15 metre while it would be 7 metre at the other end. As the tenders have been finalized to establish the facility, civil works are expected to commence soon, they added. The FoB connecting all the platforms was thrown open to commuters last year. The escalator will mainly benefit senior citizens, children and patients who find it difficult to climb the steps. An escalator was fixed in the subway to connect platform number 2 and 3 under Rajya Sabha MP Trichy N Siva’s Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) in 2016. Meanwhile, plans are afoot to provide WiFi at all the stations under the Trichy railway division.
