The Leucoderma Awareness Movement – India will organise the first national convention on vitiligo in the city on June 23 in an attempt to create awareness of the condition.

Those affected by vitiligo will gather to express their grievances and discuss it with medical professionals, said K. Umapathy, Secretary, Leucoderma Awareness Movement – India. “Over 17 doctors will be attending the conference to discuss vitiligo in relation to cosmetic surgery, psychology, law and several other domains,” he said.

Stating that people at large had misconceptions about vitiligo, said Mr. Umapathy said that they had to struggle for years to get the government to notice. “In 2014, a student was removed from their college as they believed the condition was contagious. The government has since passed several orders that prevent such unjust treatment,” he said.
