Trichy City Corporation removed more than 20 encroachments by small shops and hawkers from the central bus stand on Wednesday.
The civic body has been conducting eviction drive on regular interval to check mushrooming hawkers who often expand their space to the pedestrian pathway or resting place meant for passengers. The central bus stand at Cantonment has been reeling under space crunch over the increasing population of commuters and buses over the years. Hawkers and temporary shops have been encroaching on the space resulting in congestion.
This has prompted the civic body to carry periodic eviction drives to free up space inside the bus stand. On Wednesday too, the corporation officials conducted an inspection and informed hawkers selling, fruits, food and electrical items to vacate the bus stand premises. As they refused to move even after repeated warnings, the corporation officials went on to remove the make shift arrangements with police protection.
Some of the hawkers staged protest against the eviction drive contending that they have been making their livelihood out of the sales and are not disturbing commuters. A police team led by sub-inspector Manikandan from the Cantonment police station conducted talks with the agitators and asked them to cooperate with the civic body officials. Later, the hawkers took their belongings and the encroachments were removed by the civic body officials.
