Despite the increased rate of overall population in the district, the sex ratio has witnessed a decline, Trichy district collector, S Sivarasu has said. To overcome this and to create awareness on the male-female sex ratio at birth and other aspects, the district administration is planning a series of programmes to commemorate World Population Day to be observed on July 11.
Since 1991, the sex ratio saw a declining trend with Trichy accounting for 945 females for every 1000 males in 1991. In 2001, the number declined to 921. It further deteriorated to 889 in 2016 calling for an immediate action to find out the reason behind the drop. As a result of changing focus on the reasons for the abysmal decline, the ratio jumped to 947 in 2017 but it came down to 941 in 2018.
In 2019, the sex ratio stood at 947 till date. According to data released by the district collector office, Trichy district remains with a burgeoning population of 29, 57,344. Stating that a lot has to be done in this regard, the district administration will hold essay writing, oral, drawing competitions among school students on World Population Day theme.
The winners will be rewarded at a function to be held on July 11. On July 10, the sapling planting programme will be held at all primary health centres, government hospitals and Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital in Trichy. Special family planning programmes will be held in all primary health centres and city health centres from July 11 to July 24.
