In keeping with the guidelines of University Grants Commission, the Bharathidasan University on Monday initiated a Student Induction Programme (SIP) spanning five days, to facilitate first-year students of postgraduate programmes to know about their institution and understand its history.
Students were taken on visit to the library, University Informatics Centre, Spirituality and Yogic Science section, Fitness Centre, and Health Centre.
Welcoming the entrants as new members of the university’s family, P.Manisankar, Vice Chancellor, complimented them for choosing BDU, which, he stated, was the only State university to secure A+ ranking from the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee under the new system, for pursuing their PG studies. The NIRF ranking of the university was poised to reach within the top 20 in the years to come, from the 60th position at present. The university was ranked 66th last year, he said.
There was no use in academic merits without good character. Inclusion of value education in the curriculum was necessary, the VC said.
Duraiarasan, Controller of Examinations and Registrar in-charge, encouraged the students to utilise the facilities in the university campus optimally, while S. Rajasekar, Dean, Faculty of Science, detailed the availability of costly instruments and equipment for pursuing research.
Selvam, Co-ordinator of SIP and Dean, Faculty of Management, said the first three days will encompass lecture sessions on motivation, mind strengthening, and communication skills. The fourth day is meant for cultural competitions, while the final day will witness presentations by various committees formed to prevent ragging and prevent sexual harassment at work place, and to undertake green initiatives, NCC and NSS activities, explaining initiatives of placement cell , Youth Red Cross, Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development, Prof. Selvam said.
V.K. Boominathan, formerly Head, Department of Commerce, Bishop Heber College, and S. Senthil Kumar, Centre for Cultural Education Training and Research, Coimbatore, delivered special lectures on ‘Motivation and Leadership’ and ‘Mindfulness’ respectively.
Alibava, Dean of Languages, and Coordinator of cultural competitions, and N.Manimekalai, Dean Faculty of Arts, also addressed the students.
Motivational videos made by Department of Educational Technology and university departments were screened on the occasion for the nearly 1,000 students.
