Trichy City Corporation has started the preliminary work on Gandhi Market redevelopment project under the Smart Cities Mission. A consultant appointed by the civic body has started surveying the area as a part of preparing the detailed project report (DPR).
Though the Gandhi market redevelopment project was proposed by the civic body in June 2017, the continuing controversy over the market’s relocation held the proposals from taking shape. Officials said that the facility, which has 920 shops, will be redeveloped in a phased manner to sort out the existing problems. Through the proposed plan, the market will be developed into an organised hub of vegetable and fruit vendors having userfriendly amenities. But, the civic body is unclear about relocating the existing shops to pave way for the reconstruction work.
“We have not come to a conclusion about relocation,” an official said. Apart from 1,000 established traders in the market, close to 800 unorganized vendors occupy space near the five major entrances of the market.
