With the identity of the three main accused ascertained, the special teams of police intensified their search in Karur and neighbouring districts for the six accused in the murder of a man and his son, ostensibly for helping to retrieve an encroached lake from a group of people in Mudhalaipatti in Karur. Kulithalai police identified K Perumal, S Jayakandhan and K Sasikumar of Mudhalaipatti as the key murderers of Veeramalai, 65, and his son Nallathambi alias Vaandu, 40, hailing from the same village.
The father-son duo was killed in the village on Monday morning. The three accused were identified with help of an eyewitness, Veeramalai’s daughter V Annalakshmi, 38. According to her complaint, the six-member gang hacked her brother Nallathambi to death in front of her near the water tank in the village. Annalakshmi said that Jayakandhan was the first to attack him with a sickle on his neck followed by the rest of the gang. The murder of her father took place near her house.
The woman could not confirm the identity of the three others who, police sources said, could have been hired from other areas. Though the identities of the main accused were revealed, the police were clueless about their whereabouts. Hence the teams fanned across several neighbouring districts in search of them and the others. The murder was the fallout of a row over encroachment of a major portion of the 39 acres of a lake by some people in the village for more than 30 years.
Veeramalai and Nallathambi moved the Madras high court to evict the encroachment from the water body. The revenue officials had also surveyed the land and asked the encroachers to vacate.
