During temple car festival at Vedaranyam killed a devotee


A stampede during the temple car festival at Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam killed a devotee and left another with grievous injuries on Monday.

The incident took place after the two of them came under the wheels of the temple car during a procession. The deceased has been identified as Panchanathan, 65. Over a 1,000 people had gathered to witness the car festival of Malaimariamman temple at Vedaranyam. In the rush among devotees to pull the rope attached to the temple car, a couple of them fell down and the wheel on the left side of the car ran over them.

The incident killed Panchanathan on the spot while Kumarasan, 64, who sustained injuries is undergoing treatment at the government medical college hospital in Tiruvarur. Vedaranyam police have filed a case in this regard and further investigation is on.
