Thennur is facing a dearth of parking space forcing people to park their vehicles on narrow roads, local people have urged Trichy City Corporation to convert the vacant space beneath the Thennur road over bridge (RoB) into a parking lot. Now the space is used to discard waste.
The civic body can help decongest the arterial roads and earn some revenue if the space is utilized to set up a pay parking facility, the residents said. Thennur, serving as a gateway for commercial streets such as Thillai Nagar and Sasthri Road, is gasping for parking space. Customers of the commercial outlets are forced to park their vehicles on the roads as the shops don’t have parking space.
Even the narrow roads become narrower causing frequent traffic congestion on Thennur High Road. As a solution, residents said that the vacant space below the Thennur RoB can be converted as a paid parking facility. “Such a facility in the area would invite good patronage. Traffic police should divert vehicles parked on the roads to prevent traffic congestion,” K P Rangaprasad, joint secretary, Satta Panchayat movement said. Thennur RoB has a vacant space of around 100 metres between Thennur High Road and the TNEB office, which can also be turned as a parking space for two-wheelers as well as cars. Since anti-social elements are misusing the vacant space, local people said that facilitating a paid parking space would prevent their activities as well. It may be recalled that the corporation has converted a vacant space under Palakkarai RoB into a walking track-cum-park. City developers have urged the local body to address the pressing issues of the city such as parking by converting such vacant spaces below other RoBs too into parking lots.
“For now, we do not have proposals to allow paid parking facility below the bridges. Encroachments and dumping of waste under the Thennur RoB will be cleared,” an official with Trichy City Corporation said.
