The State Highways department of Pudukkottai division has started laying a road to Subramanyaswami Temple situated atop a hillock at Viralimalai in Pudukottai district.
The work on laying the road around the hillock is being executed with funds provided by the Tourism department. The exercise of clearing bushes and road formation are under way. Simultaneously, foundation work for construction of retaining wall has begun, a highways official said.
As per the ₹3.8-crore project, after an approach road for 60 metres, the two-lane road winding up the hillock will be 360 metres long with a one metre paved shoulder on either side. The road will have lights. There will be space for parking vehicles atop the hillock near Idumbar shrine.
The highlight of the project is that there will be two elevators to take aged people from the parking lot to the temple. The Highways department will take care of maintenance of the road which will be laid by January.
There are 207 steps on the granite hillock to reach the shrine. Festivals such as the 10-day Thai Poosam, 10-day Vaikasi Visakam, Arunagirinathaar Thiruvizha in Tamil month ‘Aadi,’ Panguni Uthiram, seven-day Kandha Shasti in ‘Aippasi’ and ‘Thirukarthigai’ are celebrated at this ancient temple situated along Tiruchi – Madurai highway.
