DMK leader M K Stalin inaugurated a retiring room constructed exclusively for female students in Periyar EVR College, Trichy, through videoconferencing from Chennai on Sunday.
The building was constructed at a cost of Rs 20 lakh premises from the local area development fund of Rajya Sabha MP Trichy Siva.
Expressing happiness over inaugurating the building named after Maniammai, Stalin credited Trichy Siva for his efforts to raise the building.
Speaking at the event, Siva recalled how the college was inaugurated by M Bhaktavatsalam, former chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Later C N Annadurai inaugurated college buildings as CM followed by M Karunanidhi, who inaugurated Periyar statue in the college.
“I am privileged that the present leader of Tamil Nadu has joined the list as future chief minister of Tamil Nadu by inaugurating the building,” said Siva.
Earlier speaking at Sangamam 2019 – annual alumni meet organized by alumni association, he recalled how the college was started by Periyar to ensure that people from underprivileged section of the society get access to higher education.
