Two masked men stole gold ornaments worth Rs 13 crore from Lalitha Jewellery store near Chathiram Bus Stand in Trichy in the early hours of Wednesday after gaining entry into it by drilling a hole on the wall. The theft came to light when the staff opened the shop on Tuesday morning.
CCTV footage showed two men wearing fancy animal masks stealing gold ornaments, police said. The theft happened between 2am and 3am.
Lalitha Jewellery CMD Kiran Kumar told reporters here in the evening that gold, diamond and platinum ornaments worth Rs 13 crore were stolen.
Trichy city police commissioner A Amalraj and central zone inspector general of police V Varadharaju visited the spot.
Forensic experts were collecting samples from the spot.
It is the second major burglary in Trichy after the one at Punjab National Bank in January. Three lockers at PNB were broken and Rs 19 lakh in cash, 470 sovereigns of gold and documents were stolen.
