More vantage spots at the airport here have been brought under round-the-clock surveillance.
The Airports Authority of India here had sought from its headquarters the installation of more cameras to cover left over areas within the airport premises. Based on a survey, approval for installation of more cameras was given.
So, 51 more cameras were procured and installed costing nearly Rs.one crore, Airport Director K. Gunasekaran said on Thursday after inaugurating the facility. With this, the total number of cameras installed has exceeded 160.
These high definition cameras have been kept at strategic locations to cover the city-side, car parking area and other vital points. They are connected to the control room which is manned round-the-clock by the Central Industrial Security Force personnel. The CISF strength at this airport is around 300.
Four high definition video walls have also been installed.
Movement of international passengers at the airport outnumbers domestic traffic. According to AAI statistics, the airport handled over 15.78 lakh passengers (international and domestic put together) during the 2018-19 financial year. International passengers alone accounted for more than 12.5 lakh in the same period.
