The comedian Charle, was the cynosure of all eyes when he received a doctorate degree in a topic dear to his heart from the Tamil University on Tuesday. The actor, whose thesis on ‘Comedy in Tamil Cinema’ was commended in no small measure by the teaching fraternity, was among 150 candidates to receive their doctorate degrees from the Governor and Chancellor Banwarilal Purohit.Mr. Charle chose the apt topic, his guide K. Ravindran, former Dean, Department of Drama, Tamil University, said. “We had detailed discussions on the topic before proceeding with the thesis. As Mr. Charle was a drama artiste before he became an actor, he understands the use of body language through comedy.
Using that as a point of focus, the detailed study was conducted,” he said. The thesis outlined the history of comedy in Tamil Cinema from silent films, to the role of drama artistes, slapstick comedy, caustic humour to the role of comedians in modern-day cinema. “Important artistes like N.S. Krishnan, J. P. Chandrababu and others were highlighted in the thesis," Prof. Ravindran said, adding that Mr. Charle was keen on emphasising that comedians were the most important actors in cinema as they drove the narrative. Congratulating Mr. Charle on his efforts, Mr. Ravindran said that work on the thesis began in 2013 and was completed last year. ‘Mr. Charle had to do it part-time so as to accommodate his other commitments. Nonetheless, it was detailed and well-researched. Mr. Charle must be commended for working for his degree, in a scenario where actors are conferred with the status,’ Prof. Ravindran said. ‘I am proud to receive my Ph.D. from the university founded by former Chief Minister and actor M.G.Ramachandran,’ said Mr. Charle, overwhelmed by the number of phone calls and congratulatory messages.
